Maybelline Babylips Dr Rescue

As regular readers of the blog will know, I am a die hard Maybelline fan, I am also an avid collector of lip balms. I purchase them every chance I get as I find them very handy to keep in my bags and pockets, so today I am going to review a new product from Maybelline which is fast becoming a cult classic. This particular product is currently only available in the US, however Boots recently had an offer where this was available for free, so I had to try it: try this:
First thoughts, I love the name and the packaging of this product, I have been waiting months for this to be released in the UK but it looks like there are no current plans to release them here. There are a range of colours to choose from in the states, but Boots only had one colour available which is a pale pink. Not to be confused with the original babylips, this is the Dr Rescue version which claims to be a medicated lip balm, or in other words, a harder working lip balm than the original babylips. This is how the product is described on the Maybelline website:
No more basic lip balm.
Medicated care + 12 HR hydration.
Soothes quickly with a hint of eucalyptus.
Cools sore lips with a touch of icy menthol
In 6 new natural tints to even out lip tone for healthier-looking lips
Medicated care soothes sore lips and combats dryness
In 6 New natural tints
In 1 minute, lips feel soothed.*
In 1 day, lips look more smooth.*
In 1 week, lips are renewed*

*Based on panelists' self-evaluation
Apply in the center of your upper lip to the outer edges, following the contours of your mouth. Then glide across the entire bottom lip. Can be worn under lip color.
I can't say there are many positives to this product, I like the packaging and that's pretty much where the positives begin and end. I love Maybelline but every once in a while they release a product which simply doesn't live up to the hype. Firstly, I'm not a fan of the smell which reminds me of cold and flu products, it smells similar to a Vick's inhaler which isn't really what I want to be applying to my lips. It claims to give 12 hours of hydration, for me it was more like an hour then I had to reapply as my lips felt dry and sore again. It temporarily eases sore, dry lips on application but not for long. I used this product for a week and didn't notice a difference, I also do not like the colour as it's a pale pink but once applied, it leaves a plastic looking finish which is just not flattering. Overall, I am very disappointed in this product, I had such high hopes after hearing so many American fans saying how much they love them, I just think that this product makes some bold claims yet does not live up to any of them. When I compare this to my regular Body shop lip balm, everything about it is better, from the colour, to the smell, to how long it lasts. I think this is one product that the UK market will not miss and I can't help but think the Babylips range is just a gimmick because of the name and cute packaging!
