Nicky Clarke Supergloss Brunette Shampoo & Conditioner

As most of you will know, I colour my hair frequently so my shampoo and conditioner play a big part in my hair care routine. I usually swear by Herbal Essences to keep my hair soft and shiny, but after spotting this on a recent shopping trip, I decided to give it a go...

What does the product description say?

The Product Aim Everyone wants that gorgeous salon finish at the end of every hair wash. Originally, I was drawn to the product by the packaging and I had been wanting to try a new shampoo and conditioner specifically for brunette hair. My hair is currently dark brunette with hints of red and purple so I wanted something that would preserve my colour whilst keeping it soft and shiny. I find that many colour protect shampoos and conditioners leave my hair feeling dry and coarse, however I noticed that this contains keratin, I absolutely love products with this in as it's literally the only thing that works on my hair to make it soft.

I try not to wash my hair too often to preserve the colour as long as I possibly can, I rely heavily on dry shampoo to get me through to the next time I'll be washing my hair, currently I only wash it twice a week as everyone who colours their hair will know that shampooing fades and strips the colour like nothing else. But after washing my hair with this once, I can honestly say I am now converted to this brand! The shampoo lathers up really well and the conditioner really leaves my hair soft and silky.
I'm not too keen on the fragrance however, it is coffee and cedarwood which to me is just bizarre. I definitely prefer more fruity smelling hair care products. However I thoroughly recommend these products for anyone with brunette hair that wants to keep it shiny and healthy whilst bringing out the best of your hair colour. My hair was immediately softer after using it just once, I think this is due to the keratin. I bought these for 5.99 each from Tesco for 250ml bottles, which is a little more than I would usually pay but I think this is worth shelling out more for.

As most of you will know, when it comes to dry shampoo I usually stick to my old favourite Batiste. I've tried many dry shampoos over the years, as I'm lazy when it comes to washing my hair, and the fact that I dye my hair means I don't like to wash it very often to try and protect my colour. I had heard of this dry shampoo a couple of months ago, but I was having trouble finding it as it is exclusive to Superdrug.

What do I think?
Firstly, I like the packaging, it may not be as pretty as the Batiste packaging,  but it looks modern and sleek and wouldn't look out of place backstage at a fashion show. I was excited to try this because I knew it had been endorsed by a fellow beauty blogger so I had high hopes. Secondly, I love the fragrance of this, it is strong but it smells more expensive and luxurious than the likes of Batiste. The fragrance also seems to last a lot longer than Batiste as I kept noticing it throughout the day. I also love the fact that there is a wide range of dry shampoos to choose from ranging from different fragrances like New York, London, Paris etc and I decided to try the Paris dry shampoo as it is my favourite city to visit.

It also has extreme volume, so I find this brilliant to use to add some volume in my hair or texture. This would be amazing for back combing for a night out/party or simply to add some texture and mess up your do, as it feels as though it is half hairspray and half dry shampoo. You simply spray a little at your roots and under your layers and then massage it in to create volume and texture. I also find that it really does help to keep my hair fresh and clean in between washes and lasts all day.

The only downside to this, is that like many dry shampoos, this is rather powdery and leaves the dreaded chalky white finish, I noticed halfway through the day that I had a white patch at my crown which made it look as though I had grey hair. However, I purchased the extreme volume edition but there are sheer invisible dry shampoos in the range which won't leave the chalky finish. So my advice would be to use this sparingly as a little goes a long way and to make sure you blend it all in once you're done spraying. I also found that it took the shine out of my hair slightly, making it dull but I find this happens with all dry shampoos. I love the height and volume it creates in my hair and I would use this even on days when I have washed my hair, simply to create volume at my roots.

This feels like a high quality product and I am now converted as this does everything I want! However it loses points for lack of availability in stores. Overall I love this product and I would highly recommend. I bought this for £2.99 in Superdrug where it is currently on offer.

Garnier Ultimate Blends The Nourishing Repairer

Garnier Ultimate Blends The Nourishing Repairer

I was curious about this new range of shampoos and conditioners by Garnier, and after reading Lucy's review (which you can read here) about the sleek restorer shampoo and conditioner, I decided to try the nourishing repairer which is for dry and damaged hair.

First things first, I spotted this on offer in Asda, I think it was around £1.89 per bottle and these are the slightly bigger bottles so not a bad price. I decided now was the time to give them a whirl. There are many different blends in the range meaning there is a shampoo and conditioner for every hair type. After much deliberation, I finally opted for the nourishing repairer as I suffer with very dry, coarse hair after years of using heat on my hair so I wanted something to give it a boost and much needed moisture. What drew me to this particular blend was the fact that it contains avocado oil which is one of the best things for your hair. I also like the fact that these range of shampoos and conditioners are specifically formulated for British hair, meaning that because the weather can never decide what it wants to do, this is formulated to prevent frizziness.

The fragrance of this shampoo and conditioner however, is just okay. It's not good but it's not bad, to me it smells a little cheap, as it also contains shea butter I was expecting a nicer fragrance but this smells like a cheap shampoo that I would expect from a low end brand, not from a high end brand like Garnier. You can only smell a hint of Shea butter which is disappointing. However the proof is in the pudding as the saying goes, so despite the cheap fragrance, I actually quite like this shampoo and conditioner.

I like to leave the conditioner on for around 3-5 minutes to make sure it really moisturises my hair and I only ever apply it to the lengths and ends of my hair. It leaves my hair soft, though I don't think this product is as good as my usual shampoo and conditioner by Herbal Essences and I certainly wouldn't replace my regular shampoo and conditioner with this. I've also yet to see any repair to my hair, as this product claims to do, but maybe I will notice a difference over time. As hair builds up an immunity to shampoo and conditioner if you keep using the same one, it is essential that you switch between brands every now and then so this will do in the meantime, before I go back to using Herbal Essences. Overall I rate this 3 out of 5, as the fragrance lets it down and it doesn't give as good results as my regular shampoo and conditioner.

John Frieda Precision Foam Hair Colour in 3VR

John Frieda Precision Foam Hair Colour

Today I'm going to review a product I've been using for a while now, but I get asked many questions regarding my hair colour and how I achieve it, so today I'm going to share my insight. My favourite hair dye to use is this John Frieda Precision Foam in the colour 3VR Deep Cherry Red from the radiant reds collection. So let's start with the basics....

The kit comes with a detailed instruction book, salon style gloves, developer, colour and conditioning treatment which I have taken a photo of above so you can see what's included. I have tried many home hair dye kits over the years, and I always found great difficulty in achieving the colour I desired, which was a dark brunette with a hint of red. I have had my hair coloured in salons, yet nothing comes close to the colour this kit achieves, which is exactly what I want. The RRP of this kit is £9.99, which is expensive for a home hair dye kit, however it's usually always on offer in Boots, Superdrug and Tesco for £6.99. The box looks professional and different to other home hair dye kit brands as it doesn't look cheap, it looks expensive and stands out from the crowd. They have chosen to use an image of a model on the front (as all kits do) but in order to stand out, the model's image is in black and white and beneath that is a strip depicting the colour. I've read reviews where people complain about this as they want to see what the colour looks like on a person, but if you flip the box over there is the same image of the model but in colour. There is also a colour chart on the side of the box showing how it will turn out, but remember how your end result will be depends on the current state and colour of your hair, if you're unsure then simply carry out a strand test before colouring your whole head!

So what's in the kit? The first thing I noticed was the black latex gloves, which are more like what you would see a hair dresser use. They aren't the flimsy plastic gloves you usually get with home hair dye kits, which are often too big and end up falling off halfway through application! The second thing I noticed was the developer bottle which has a nozzle at the top, you simply squeeze the sides of the bottle and it dispenses the foam. It is rather deceiving as once you mix the formula, it doesn't look like much and you do wonder whether it will be enough, but I can assure you that it provides more than enough dye, in fact I would even say that this bottle holds enough dye to cover your head and possibly a friend's! There is a small bottle of the actual colour which you simply pour into the developer bottle (tip: always check that the bottle containing the colour has the same code as what's on the box so you don't end up colouring your hair a completely different colour) and to mix you simply tip the bottle upside down slowly five times.

The conditioner provided is very nice, it smells good and locks in your colour to leave your hair soft and shiny. Another thing I was impressed with was the instruction booklet, which is detailed compared to other kits. It provides instructions on how to colour your hair whether you wish to colour only your roots or your full head. I always choose full head as hair dye never takes very well to my hair and fades quickly, so I have to dye once a month. Many people prefer using the traditional cream hair dyes as they believe foam is only temporary and washes out too easily. I have used both foam and cream dyes and I can honestly say that I much prefer foam dyes, they are much easier to apply and they don't drip. I will say that I have used other brands of foam dyes and they do wash out and fade quickly, this kit is the only one which lasts a while in my hair.

Application: I find the application process very painless. I usually find that cream dyes are difficult to apply and take a long time. This is quick and easy, and you can easily do it yourself. I do my roots and front of head first, simply folding over each section of hair as I go. The trickiest part is always the back of my head which I usually just have to guess and try and split the sections. The smell isn't overwhelming, in fact I can barely smell it during application. If I can smell the ammonia or chemicals, this usually puts me off using a dye. It doesn't drip either, which means I can walk around the house without fear of it dripping everywhere. It takes me around 10-15 minutes to apply and then the instructions recommend leaving it on for no longer than 30 minutes. I always leave mine on for 40, which is not recommended but I do this as it makes the colour slightly darker in my hair and seems to last longer. I then rinse and condition until all the dye is out.

Result: I am always impressed with the end result of this dye. My hair feels soft and shiny and I receive many compliments regarding my colour. In fact I receive more compliments from using this dye than I do when I have had it coloured at a salon, even hair dressers have complimented it. I have paid a lot for my hair to be coloured at salons and hair dressers will always argue that nothing beats a professional dying your hair, however my theory is why pay £100 when I can pay £6.99 and the colour comes out better and exactly how I want it? I can honestly say that I will never go to a salon again for a colour, as long as this kit exists! Home hair dye kits have come a long way in recent times, with new formulas and products being developed constantly to rival salon colours. In my opinion, this is the best home hair dye kit on the market and is the only one I use. I have taken some close up shots so you can really see the colour. The pictures don't do the colour justice as it looks a lot better in real life! The box describes it as "a deep brown/black shade with violet and red tones." I would describe it as a rich, dark brunette with red and purple tones. The final result is very dark and it looks black in certain light, but don't forget that this will fade to a medium brunette with a hint of red, I find that the violet tones don't last very long at all. This dye is good for those who are wanting a hint of red but without radically changing their colour and without the upkeep that red hair brings. This is a permanent dye but as me and Lucy discussed earlier today, permanent dyes never last, so they might as well all be temporary. In the sun, the red is a lot more evident as you can see in one of the below images. Overall excellent results!

BEFORE
AFTER
The first image is me a day before colouring and after so you can see the difference. My hair was previously coloured with the same dye so I was basically reapplying after about 6 weeks.

Garnier Ultimate Blends Shampoo & Conditioner

Garnier Ultimate Blends Shampoo & Conditioner 'The Sleek Restorer'

My hair is ultra thick and can be unruly and even after masses of conditioner applied still has a lot of frizz and static. I am not lucky in the fact I must blow-dry my hair each time I wash if I want to achieve sleekness. This does however benefit me when it comes to waiting between washes. I can go up to a week without too much oil build up using the odd spray of dry shampoo.

Because of the texture of my hair I am always on the look out for those perfect anti-frizz products which will leave my hair smooth and glossy helping me save time on blowdrying and styling/straightening etc...

I was excited to try out theses new Garnier products as they claim to be anti frizz and 'sleek restoring'. I was sold on the ingredients and smell alone! Cocoa butter is one of my all time favourite beauty product ingredients and with the addition of coconut oil the smell is divine, so sweet and yummy!

The result was impressive, I was happy with how sleek and smooth my hair felt even when wet even before blowdrying. When I had finished drying, brushing and styling, my hair was super shiny and glossy.

I am happy to keep re-purchasing these products as they have the same if not a better result as other more expensive anti frizz brands I've tried such as the John Frieda anti frizz shampoo retailing at £5.89 for 250ml. These Garnier shampoos are not the cheapest you'll find at £3.89 but they are great quality and have 400ml per bottle which is more product for the price than some of it's competitors.
